Chapter Twelve

Tao stared up at the glittering building. “I hadn’t thought about it being unusual before but I suppose it is. I’ve wandered all over London for the last two months and never ended up at the foot of that tower.” He gave a short laugh.

West set off walking again. “No, you wouldn’t.”

“Why not? Is that where you work?”

“Where my boss lives. Very few can see Eyria let alone get into it.”

“Is that where we’re going?” Tao asked.

“No. The British Museum.”

“Why?”

“Because I think I might know what you are.”

Tao’s heart thumped against his ribs. “And the answer is in the museum?”

“Possibly. There’s someone in there I need to speak to.”

They weaved around the crowds on Oxford Street, Tao struggling to keep up with West’s fast pace. Suddenly West stopped when a big group of tourists filled the pavement and Tao walked into his back. West took a step away from him, then reached back and grabbed Tao’s hand. Tao grinned. Then West let him go and Tao’s grin faded only for West to hold his hand again.

“I don’t believe it,” West muttered.

“What?”

“Too complicated to explain but don’t let go of my hand.”

When the crowds slowed them down, West turned to him. “I was being watched, but for some reason when the two of us are in contact, the watcher loses me.”

“Is that why you’re holding my hand?” Tao tried not to sound disappointed though he was boggling at the idea of what West had said.

“Yeah.”

“Thanks a lot.” Tao didn’t try to keep the grump out of his voice.

West squeezed his fingers. “I like holding your hand, but I don’t like drawing attention to myself.”

“Why does Makk want me? Is it something to do with magic? Is he looking for a…Harry Potter? Hasn’t he noticed my scar’s in the wrong place?”

West gave a tight smile. “Whatever he wants you for it won’t be good.”

In the confusion of everything else, Tao understood that.

West didn’t let go of his hand until they were inside the museum. He stroked Tao’s palm with his thumb before he released him. “I do like holding your hand.”

Tao forgave him everything. “I like holding yours.” He looked around the museum’s huge inner courtyard, a two-acre space enclosed by a spectacular glass roof. “I love it in here.”

“What do you like best?”

“It’s dry, warm and I can use the bathroom. And the exhibits aren’t bad.”

West chuckled.

Tao followed him to the Greek and Roman sculptures.

“Are you meeting someone?” Tao asked.

“Sanjay, but I have to find him first. He likes to play hide and seek. See if you can stand between me, the cameras, and the security staff.”

West moved around the room from piece to piece brushing his fingers against items on display. Tao tried to shield him from view. Maybe Sanjay was a curator or one of the stern-looking people watching for anyone doing something they shouldn’t. Like stroking exhibits that had signs saying don’t touch, or coming in to spend a few hours somewhere warm. He followed West into another section and West paused by a statue of Dionysus.
